About Le Trec

Le Trec is short for Technique De Randonnee Equestre De Competition. It is best described as orienteering on horseback. There are 3 phases: Orienteering, Control of Paces/Gaits and Obstacle Course. For the orienteering phase, teams of 3-4 riders of the same riding ability follow a route on a map, find specific checkpoints along the route and locate hidden “objectives” based on landmarks and compass coordinates. Handlers can walk along side the D & D1 teams. The control of paces/gaits is designed to demonstrate that the rider can exercise a degree of influence over the horse. This is demonstrated by cantering (trotting for younger riders) away from the group and walking back. The last phase, obstacle course, is scene as the most exciting and popular phase for spectators. The obstacles are set-up in one general area with the focus on skills and horsemanship. The course includes some tasks which must be undertaken while dismounted, as well as tests of obedience and calmness. Each obstacle/task is optional and does not incur elimination if bypassed.
