  • Congratulations to Virginia Buchanan-Smith. Her daughter and former active Pony Club member, Rachel and hubby Keith are now proud parents of a baby girl, Claire Jane Virginia McClelland. She was born at Guelph General Hospital on Thursday, September 18, and weighed in at 8 pounds 7 ounces. Needless to say, Jock and Virginia are absolutely thrilled, as are her parents, Rachel and Keith. Both mother and daughter are doing well. They haven't found a pony yet for her, but it probably won't be long!
  • From Val Crowe at National CPC - Requirements for Jr. Instructors. A valuable reminder to all Regions, please pass it onto your Branches, especially those with new DC's. Based on the recent insurance review and in compliance with the requirements in our National Education Handbook, we feel the following information should be distributed to all branches.
  • Junior Instructors: (for mounted lessons) The junior instructor must be at least C2 level and 14 years of age with a current emergency first aid certification or higher. If the junior instructor is under 18 years of age, a knowledgeable and experienced instructor/parent with first aid certification must also be present. Further requirements are outlined within the Education Handbook, which can be downloaded from the national Pony Club web site or purchased from Supplies. pvcrowe@mts.net
  • I am pleased to announce that the International Prince Philip Games Selection Camp has been completed in Vancouver, British Columbia and our own candidates were successful. Cailin Radcliffe of Grand River P.C. and Dylan McPhail of Guelph P.C. will be traveling to the USA next summer and competing in Lexington, Kentucky at the American Nationals. Congratulations!
  • Information from your National Director. The CPC is accepting nominations for various openings at the National Level. We are looking for nominations for Education Chair and Active Member from the East. These are the only openings I can confirm at this time. If more come up, I will let you know. I would be please to talk to anyone with interest in working at the National level of the Pony Club. Contact Ralph at rrainford@sympatico.ca
  • Please be sure to use your Royal tickets if you have them. Other wise please send them to a Branch that can. They are for general admission and the evening show on Tuesday, Nov. 11. We get them free and it looks really rude if there are empty seats. We don't want to lose this fantastic privilege so please be sure if you have tickets that the seats are filled.
  • The AGM scheduled for the Cutten Club, Guelph, on Sat. Nov. 15, speak with your DC if you would like to go so we can book you a place with the caterers,
  • The Raffle will be held at the AGM. Therefore D.C.'s should be gathering up the sold tickets and making sure all the stubs get to the meeting for the draw.
  • Please DCs, extend an invitation to parents to consider taking an active role either on their Branch executive or at the Regional level - the more interest the better.
  • Horse sale fraud – beware - A large-scale fraud is taking place in the horse industry. People selling horses are receiving buyer inquiries from a person with a potential buyer in Nigeria or Africa. This buyer usually trys to arrange the purchase of the horse with a cashier's check for the price of the horse and shipping. After they have the horse, they ask you to refund the shipping as part of a “finders' fee”. Sometimes they send you a check for more than the purchase price and ask for a refund of the difference. The fraud part is that the cashier's check is COUNTERFEIT. This is not discovered until the horse and money has been sent to the crooks. Protect yourself, try and get as much information about the buyer as possible. If you suspect anything amiss, notify the RCMP. Here are guidelines taken from the various Internet Classified sites to watch for:
    • Offering more money than the asking price without an initial conversation and viewing of the horse is almost always a
    • sure sign of a scam. Never accept a payment of more money than you are asking for the horse.
    • Never fall to high pressure, or someone asking you to speed up the sale. If you feel pushed or stressed, take time to think it through. Don't be pressured.
    • Never give financial information to a buyer, especially if you don't know them.
    • Get things in writing, even a simple bill of sale signed by both parties lets everyone know what is agreed to. If you are selling over seas, you may be wise to have a lawyer or work through a bonded broker. (Most breed associations will know of one.)
    • Be sure if your buyer is not fluent in English to get a certified translator or again, a lawyer or broker to deal with it.
    • A buyer or seller that won't sign a mutually agreed on paper or bill of sale is usually a sure sign of a problem.
    • Remember - "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is."

  • Is your news here? It could be, send stuff please!

Cowboy's Guide To Life Posted By equine-trader on Tuesday 9th September, 2003

Don't name a pig you plan to eat.

Country fences need to be horse high, pig tight, and bull strong.

Life is not about how fast you run, or how high you climb, but how well you bounce.

Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.

Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

A bumble bee is faster than a John Deere tractor.

Words that soak into your ears are whispered, not yelled.

    Meanness don't happen overnight.

To know how country folks are doing, look at their barns, not their houses

Forgive your enemies. It messes with their heads.

Don't sell your mule to buy a plow.

Don't corner something meaner than you.

It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge.

You can't unsay a cruel thing.

    Every path has some puddles.

When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.

The best sermons are lived, not preached.

Most of the stuff people worry about never happens.

Lazy and Quarrelsome are ugly sisters.

Don't squat with your spurs on.

Don't judge people by their relatives.

When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

    Talk slowly, think quickly.

Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time.

Don't interfere with something that ain't botherin' you none.

Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

    It's better to be a has-been that a never-was.

The easiest way to eat crow is while it's still warm. The colder it gets, the harder it is to swaller.

If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.

If it don't seem like it's worth the effort, it probably ain't.

It don't take a genius to spot a goat in a flock of sheep.

Sometimes you get and sometimes you get got.

The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with watches you wash his/her face in the mirror every morning.

Never ask a barber if you need a haircut.

If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.

Don't worry about bitin' off more'n you can chew; your mouth is a whole lot bigger'n you think.

Only cows know why they stampede.

Always drink upstream from the herd.

Generally, you ain't learnin' nothing when your mouth's a-jawin'.

Tellin' a man to git lost and makin' him do it are two entirely different propositions.

If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there with ya.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.

When you give a personal lesson in meanness to a critter or to a person, don't be surprised if they learn their lesson.

When you're throwin' your weight around, be ready to have it thrown around by somebody else.

Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back.

Always take a good look at what you're about to eat. It's not so important to know what it is, but it's sure crucial to know what it was.

The quickest way to double your money is to fold it over and put it back into your pocket.

You can't tell how good a man or a watermelon is 'til they get thumped.

Never miss a good chance to shut up.

If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen are defrocked, shouldn't it follow that cowboys would be deranged?
