  • GIGANTIC TACK SALE AT QUIZ MAY 1ST! The very best place to buy and sell all items - riding and horse clothing, tack and horse related items. New, gently used and well-used items are available. Bring your outgrown items! Buy items for this year's season! This is also a fundraiser, WOR get 10% of the sales price. There are some changes this year – please read the following:
    • Sellers:
      • You must label every item with your name, your club, and your price before you come.
      • The label must be affixed to the item by string or some other removable tag. The tags are how we pay out at the end. Stickers and tape that that we must take off the item get torn or stuck to other tags in the cash box and are hard to deal with. Tags that are put on coat hangers get separated from the item. We want our sellers to have a successful sale so be sure your tag will stay with the item but that we can easily remove it to pay you.
      • Have it there early, the serious buying is done in the first half-hour every year.
      • Items must be clean, no dirt and straw for us to clean up after please
      • Sizes are very important if you want to sell an item.
      • No helmets can legally be sold second hand so we will not carry them in the used section.
      • You may be paid by cash at the end of the day (until we run out), or you may get a WOR check mailed later by our treasurer.
    • Buyers:
      • Checks or cash only, checks payable to WOR. no credit or debit card equip. on scene.
      • Know your sizes, bring your check book, try-ons are allowed
      • We cannot hold things, everything is for sale to the first person who pays, the early bird get the best deal.

  • Information from the last Regional Meeting
    • Managing a Branch Copies of a manual were distributed containing good information to guide DC's. Share with others in Branch. Goes through qualities of DC, what the ADC does, ideas of timing (month by month layout).
      • The DC is a very important person - lots of responsibility and accountability. DC's cannot have a financial interest in the horse industry - cannot own a barn, tack shop, teach lessons etc. Prevents conflict of interest. We all work together though, share the load. Learn to say “No.” Delegate work - ask others to help out too. Encourage volunteers, they will learn by doing. Encourage parents to attend the Regional meetings. It really helps them understand what Pony Club is all about and helps them learn the “lingo” of Pony Club. Encourage them that it is a learning experience and you learn by doing. It is not hard work, but people need to be encouraged to take on a task and know they are supported in doing it.
      • There is a wealth of knowledge and experience in the Region - use these people, they are happy to help.
    • We are here for the kids to help them learn to be a good horsemen/women. Opportunity to help them learn to grow/experience/mature. Learn human relations skills.
    • Mounted meetings - Headwaters looking for input from other clubs how they run their mounted meetings. Please email them with info.
    • Treat each other with respect. We are all volunteers.

  • SPECIAL AWARD Colin Peace will be receiving the Syl Apps Special Achievement Award for his volunteer work in Modern Pentathlon. Congratulations Colin!

  • MILL RIDGE PONY CLUB is hosting an education meeting on April 21st 2004 at 7p.m., in the Wellington Room at the Grand River Raceway in Elora, presented by Dr.Bob Wright of The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The topic will be "Equine Encephalitis, Surveillance and Prevention - West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis" and "Strangles". This meeting is open to ALL Pony Club members and the general public. There is a cost of $1 (just to cover expenses) for anyone OVER the age of 16 years. Dr. Wright has made presentations to Mill Ridge Pony Club previously, and they have all been interesting and informative. This is the time of the year that we all are concerned about inoculations, which ones to get. Dr. Wright will give us an unbiased view of which ones and why! Please pass this information on to all your members and their parents and we hope to see you there. PLEASE R.S.V.P. with number in your group before April 19. Jennifer Cot้ - jemini@direcway.com , 519-787-1642, or Sharon Meagher, meaghera@hotmail.com Phone 519-787-0508

  • I thought some of you might find this interesting, especially if you are looking for crafts to do at camp or for badges. The web site seems good - full color pictures of the crafts and lots of other stuff. Please pass this on to anyone in your Region that might be interested. - “Looking for Horsy Crafts for Your Pony Club? Horse Lover's Crafts Can Help! We offer a full line of craft kits to make your planning fast and easy. All our kits come with materials for 12 students to enjoy making a great horse craft, a perfect activity for all your young horse lovers. Call for a FREE Catalogue Today. 1-877-6CRAFTS (627-2387) or visit our website at: www.horseloverscrafts.com “

  • Badge Program from National - The new badge program is running and Branches are encouraged to start the program whenever they wish. It is our hope that Branches will purchase the badges and then give them to their members as they earn them. Each Branch and/or Region can decide how they wish to display the badges. Some people have suggested a sash, some a vest or shirt, and some thought maybe a miniature saddle pad. We have decided to leave this decision up to the kids. Remember, this program is not meant to replace testing. Many of the badges are for non-tested areas. The idea is to encourage your members to explore other interests as part of a well-rounded education. Many members do not wish to test every year and the badge program gives them something else to work towards. We have endeavored to keep the paperwork to a minimum and this program is supposed to be fun.

  • Tetrathlon - Gail Dennison has arranged shooting practice/coaching for those who may be interested in learning or practicing their shooting. The Burlington Rifle and Revolver Club offers a time slot to Juniors (18 and under) from 8:30 - 1pm every Saturday morning. The cost to join the club as a Junior for the year is $22.00. They're pretty flexible - you go when you can... there is always one or two of the guys there to provide instruction and supervision. The kids have the opportunity to learn about and try all sorts of guns, as well as air pistol practice. It's a good idea to let him know you are coming so they can set up enough ports. They do like you to get there for 8:30 so the kids can help set up the range. For any info on Tetrathalon contact Gail Dennison at don.mitchell@sympatico.ca

  • Albion Pony Club's Tetrathlon Mini Meet is April 25, in Orangeville, ON. Swimming and Shooting will take place at Tony Rose Sports Complex and running will be held at Monora Park which is a change from last year's cross-country location and should prove to be an improved venue for the run. The registration forms, event notice, and a map to the event locations are available on both the Albion Pony Club and the WOR website. We welcome volunteers to time-keep at the pool, help at the shooting gallery, and be spotters on the cross-country course. Any questions, call Nathan Higgins at 519.938.9766 or the.higgins@sympatico.ca

  • Mount Nemo Pony Club's Tetrathalon Mini Meet is May 15th. Registrations and shooting are at the Burlington Rifle and Revolver Club (1548 King Rd. Burlington) Order of Go for all Events: Nov. - Jr. - Sr. Running will take place at LaSalle Park (50 Northshore Blvd. W. Burlington), and Swimming at Aldershot Pool, (50 Fairwood Place Burlington.) More information is on WOR website. Please R.S.V.P. Denise Trigatti, Manorun@hwcn.org or Linda Agnew, agnew@sympatico.ca

  • The South African Exchange opportunity for Dressage & Show Jumping is once again on for 2004. We should let our WOR members know now that the opportunity is available, so that any interested members can start to plan and work toward that goal. Like the recent Irish Fox Hunting and Dressage Exchange in New Zealand, this exchange is not a nationally recognized exchange subject to travel subsidy. Cost may be a factor for many. The last time that Canada attended this exchange was in 1998. WOR had 4 of the 6 members on that team. You can get a good idea of what this exchange is like by reading about that tour on our website. Go to National Events, then to 1998 and click on South Africa. You will hear more about applications and itinerary from Billi and Kasia as info becomes available.

  • Notice to all pony club branches - the Dressage/ShowJumping Regional Finals is on July 17th at Century Court - we are looking for any clubs who may be interested in looking after the food booth for the day. Contact Darlene Haines - rick.haines@rogers.com
