Show Jumping/ Dressage

Dressage & Show Jumping

Dressage means conditioning of the horse's mind, timing his responses giving the impression that horse and rider are a pair working as one. It is the foundation from which all of the riding disciplines within Pony Club evolve. At the lower levels of Pony Club, dressage relates to basic flat work.

Show jumping tests a rider's ability to combine speed with accuracy over a stadium course comprised of knockdown jumps. It is an event that is popular among spectators everywhere. It provides a source of excitement for everyone, even those who may have never even seen a horse show before!    Our members practice show jumping as part of their weekly lessons, and in preparation for the Rally event held in August each year.

For those who have never seen a show jumping event, the objective is for riders to complete the course of jumps with the least amount of penalties being accumulated and without having exceeded the time allowed. Penalties are assessed for knockdowns and refusals. In the event of a tie, or with more than one rider having gone clear, then a timed jump-off is held with the rider having gone the fastest with the least penalties being the winner.  At the beginner or D levels, the jumps are very small, (2’3” - 2’6”) and riders do not have to compete in a timed jump-off.  This is reserved for the higher levels, and is always one of the most popular events to watch.
