SLOV Regional Youth Page

The Regional Youth Reps for 2007 are Anne-Marie Duarte (Rideau P.C.) and Emma Walker (United Counties P.C.).

Anne-Marie says:

I'm a long time fan and active member of SLOV. Currently in Grade 11, I'm a working student at Hawkridge and can't wait to take on the position of Regional Co-Youth rep. I would love to hear from any members who have a suggestion or comment relating to the aspects of SLOV pony club they love and would like to see more of - or desperately dislike and would like to see adapted! Other than horses.... there is no such thing as life outside of horses! Actually, I enjoy any sport, although I'm incredibly uncoordinated and therefore usually stick to simple sports like track and cross-country running. I've represented SLOV multiple times at National Quiz, am an avid competitor in Tetrathlon and the complementary sport of Modern Pentathlon. Despite not owning a horse, I'm a familiar face in the barns at both D Working Rally and C Rally as I usually find a way to participate. Amongst other things, I would like to see an increased level of participation from the youth of SLOV - never forget that Pony Club can be whatever we make it!

Emma says:

I first joined Pony Club when I was six. (I went to my first meetings at West Carleton Pony Club when I was a two-year-old, with my cousins, but I don't remember that!) I started at Ottawa Valley Hunt Pony Club, and I am now with United Counties. I live on a farm and we have three horses and two ponies, including my pony Robin, who is a thirteen-year-old Quarter Horse mare. My favourite riding discipline is eventing; I competed in Pre-Training in 2006, but I would like to move up to Training. I am a C1 and I hope to get my C2 this year. I have gone to National Tetrathlon and have participated in all of the other Pony Club events: Quiz, Show-jumping, Dressage, PPG, Polo, Rally, Musical Ride, and Le Trec. I want to be a Youth Rep because I think it will be fun and a good experience for me in learning to communicate with other people, and I like getting to know everyone from all the branches. I am really looking forward to working with Anne Marie this year, as she has always been a great mentor to me and the other younger pony clubbers.

Amy Claridge (Oxford Downs) and Anne-Marie Duarte (Napanee) have won bursaries from the OEF.

Amy writes:

I never win anything; therefore it was with great surprise that I read “Congratulations Amy, you have won the OEF Bursary for 2005.”

I signed up for the Bursary because I fit all the criteria and therefore I put a package together. I’m not an expert rider and I don’t have my own horse, so I didn’t really believe that I qualified. When I received a letter in the mail from OEF, I thought it was a newsletter and because I was too busy with school, I didn’t open it for two weeks. Finally when I did, I was shocked and overwhelmed to find out I was one of the seven in the province who had won. I also found out I had only a day left to respond to their first requirements.

The $1000 Bursary not only helped out financially, it also made me focus on my long and short term goals. For 2005, I decided to concentrate on getting my C1 level in pony club (which I completed with an 85% average), and putting together teams from Oxford Downs for the Regional PPGs (I worked with Janet Heaslip and submitted 2 teams that came in 1st and 2nd overall). I also was able to attend different shows I never have in the past. These shows included dressage and hunter shows, and 3 horse trials. I rode a didn’t open it for two weeks. I rode a green pony and this was a learning experience for both of us.

A thousand dollars seemed like a heap of money, but after the cost of the show, trailering and supplies, I am happy to report the money is all gone.

I feel very honoured to be chosen for this Bursary. Unfortunately it is back to working for what I get in life by mucking stalls and working at the barn. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that someone else in SLOV will be the winner for 2006. Just remember to open up all OEF mail right away.

Anne-Marie writes:

The winners received the Bursaries based on their current involvement with horses and their future goals as well as letters of recommendation from their coaches. Family resources and academic achievements were also considered. The $1000 OEF Bursaries go toward riding lessons, training, competition fees, continuing education, or other activities that will assist the winners in reaching their equestrian objectives for 2005.

It's been a phenomenal opportunity. In my case it's meant (among other awesome things) that I'm now riding on a regular basis with Mel Gromoff, at Fallowfield Farm in Trenton, which is very new for me, and very worthwhile!
