2010 Season
On March 30, approximately 60 Pony Club members, examiners, instructors and parents participated in an all day study of equine limb anatomy, which started with several experienced demonstrators in the WCVM anatomy lab, progressed to afternoon lectures on lameness by Dr. Lisa Wayman and on farriery by Norm Kohle, and then finished with a practice session of hoof trimming for about 20 participants. Although some younger members felt the material was overwhelming, the day was packed with learning and overall response was strongly positive.
A topic suggested for the next clinic is nutrition, including gastrointestinal anatomy, colic, parasites and equine dentistry. Please contact me with any other ideas.
The Regional Board will need to decide whether and how much to donate to the Equine Health Research Fund once we determine attendance at the Health Seminar this year.
I am still soliciting titles that deserve a place on our regional list of suggested reading. So far the Usborne Dictionary of Horses and Ponies, a text with internet links suitable for younger D, D1 and D2 members and Equine Exercise Physiology by Marlin and Nankervis, appropriate for more senior members have been put forward.
The study sites set up by Dr. Dianne Winkelman-Sim at CherryHillPonyClub.ning.com , for D and C members of that branch and SaskatchewanPonyClub.ning.com, for all senior members in the region, are operating. We encourage members to look at the information and post a comment or an answer to one of the questions. This web-based discussion of stable management topics will help with Quiz and testing preparation, among other benefits.
Any interested members, instructors, examiners or affiliates should send a request to join the forum to Dr. Winkleman-Sim at sim.dianne@sasktel.net
