2000 Ontario's Pony Club Tournament of Champions Results

Here are "highlight" results for the Central Canada Show Jumping and Dressage Championships, decided at the 2000 Ontario's Pony Club Tournament of Champions August 26-27 at the York Equestrian Centre near Newmarket.  Detailed results for each class will be posted on the Canadian Pony Club website.

Show Jumping

All show jumping divisions consisted of three classes as follows: Class 1 - Single round with jump-off if necessary; Class 2 - Speed class; Class 3 - Nations' Cup format, team and individual placings, two rounds and a jump-off if necessary. A Champion and Reserve was declared for each division based on combined three-class results.

Starter Division

The Individual Champion was Katie Murray of the Durham Pony Club in the Central Ontario Region, riding Honey Bee Sweet. The Reserve was Laura Hodgson of the Vaudreuil County Pony Club in the St. Lawrence-Ottawa Valley Region, riding Formal Affair; we must note that this was a remarkable showing by Formal Affair, a 25 year old school horse.

The first place in team competition went to a Central Ontario team made up of Erin Blakely of the Kawartha Pony Club on Spotted Wings, Allison Birdsall of the Pause Awhile Pony Club riding Solo Spirit, Katie Murray, and Madison Reeves of the Uxbridge-Scugog Pony Club aboard Pandora. Second place went to a Western Ontario team whose members were Barbie Bent of the Mill Ridge Pony Club riding Jesse, Wes Morrison of the High County Pony Club on It's All Good, and Alyssa Zehr on Split Decision, from the London Pony Club. All other teams failed to have more than two riders complete both rounds of Class 3 without being eliminated.

Beginner Division

The Individual Champion was Danielle Bechard of the Guelph Pony Club in the Western Ontario Region, aboard Blaze 'N' Glory. The Reserve was Ashley Aimone of the Ajax Pony Club in Central Ontario, riding Choice Victory.

Beginner teams were mixed by Region. The first place team included Heidi Breen riding Tynedale Bo Jangles, from the Tynedale Pony Club, Katherine Card on McFly and Charlotte Winder-Richmond on Cottage Country, both from the Timberline Pony Club in Central Ontario, and Kate Flanagan riding Va-Moose, from the Vaudreuil County Pony Club in St. Lawrence-Ottawa Valley Region. Second place in the team competition went to a team comprising Ashley Aimone, Danielle Bechard, Zoe Brown of the Pause Awhile Pony Club in Central Ontario, riding Franklin, and Becky McCuaig of Tynedale riding Calluna's Early Dawn. Again, no other team had enough riders escape elimination to place.

Novice Division

Individual Champion was Kitty Baker of the Toronto & North York Pony Club in Central Ontario, aboard Lady Disdain, and Reserve was Leslie Seville of the Bluewater Pony Club in Western Ontario, riding Sky's The Limit.

There were no team awards in this division.

Intermediate Division

Individual Champion was Ashley Lawrence of the Durham Pony Club in Central Ontario, riding Madelyn. The Reserve was Michael Durward of the Uxbridge-Scugog Pony Club, aboard Gerrie Maguyre.

These two also formed the only team to qualify for a team award in this division.

Advanced Division

Individual Champion was Kate Webb of the Simcoe Pony Club in Central Ontario, riding Merlin. Reserve went to Paula Rainford of the Esquesing Pony Club in Western Ontario, riding Holunder.

There were no team awards in this division.

Dressage

At the Championship level, there were only two divisions, Basic 2 and Basic 4. Riders in each division performed two separate tests, plus an optional Kur. Since the Kurs were optional, Champion and Reserve were declared in each division for the two tests and for the Kur, separately. Team competition in Dressage was across the divisions.

Basic 2

Basic 2 Champion was Sarah Rae of the Victoria Pony Club in Central Ontario, riding Gentle Ben. The Reserve was Shandra Robbescheuten of the Durham Pony Club, also in Central Ontario, aboard True Epik. Sarah Rae was also Basic 2 Kur Champion, with the Reserve position going to Anne-Marie Wightman of the Village Creek Pony Club in the St. Lawrence-Ottawa Valley Region.

Basic 4

Basic 4 Champion was Jenny Rae of Victoria Pony Club (a VERY good day for the Rae sisters), riding Avalon. The Reserve was Beth Murray of the Durham Pony Club. These two repeated as Champion and Reserve in the Basic 4 Kurs.

Team Awards

First place went to a Central Ontario team comprising Christy Barnes of the Pine Ridge Pony Club, riding Phineas, Christine Culbert of the Toronto & North York Pony Club riding Mr. T.D.T., and Jenny and Sarah Rae.

Central Ontario also took second place, with a team whose members were Allison Birdsall of the Pause Awhile Pony Club riding Solo Spirit, Larissa Grabowski of the Durham Pony Club, riding Full Monty, Beth Murray and Shandra Robbescheuten.

Third place went to the St. Lawrence-Ottawa Valley team, made up of Jessie Laframboise of the Appleton Pony Club, riding Willow, Brittany Weaver, also of Appleton, riding Winter Thyme, Anne-Marie Wightman, and one member who preferred to withhold her name.

Western Ontario took fourth place with a team including Jamie Anderson of the Caledon Pony Club, riding Apollo, Brooke Olejnik, also of Caledon, riding Suna, Kelly Poisson of the Windsor-Essex Pony Club, riding Dawson, and Megan Riddoch of the London Pony Club riding Sweet Pea.

Overall High Score Award

This was for the best score in any class over the whole two days. It went to Sarah Rae, with a score of 68.75 in Basic 2C.
